Grandma's Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Shortening
  • 2 cup Sifted Flour
  • 2 level Tbsp Cocoa
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 oz. Bottle Red Food Coloring
  • 1 oz. Water
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 Tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

Red Velvet Frosting Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 Tbsp Flour
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

Preparation:

Combine sugar, shortening, flour, cocoa, salt, water and food coloring with 2/3 cup buttermilk. Beat until well blended.

Add eggs, remainder of buttermilk and vanilla. Beat 1 minute. Mix together vinegar and soda and fold into batter by hand. Do not beaTbsp Pour into greased pans and bake in a 350° F oven for 30 minutes.

After cake has cooled prepare the frosting. In a medium saucepan on medium heat, mix Crisco, milk and flour until thick. Cool in refrigerator until cold. Mix in sugar and vanilla until creamy.
